Michael F & Co – 7 West 47th Street, New York | Diamond & Jewelry Photography

Photographing diamond jewelry is one of the most frustrating affairs a product photographer goes though.  On one hand you want large, soft and even light for the reflective metal – on the other hand you need a hard, specular highlights to make the diamond come alive, while also introducing dark reflections in the metal to define the shape of the piece.  Most photographers already know how difficult it is to photograph low quality jewelry.  By the way, low quality does not necessary mean cheap, while high quality is not always expensive.

Thankfully, this post is about some of the highest quality jewelry on the market.

Recently, I spent two weeks photographing Michael Fuzaylov’s jewelry in his small, but very impressive store in the heart of New York’s Diamond District.  The shoot was for Michael’s forthcoming website, expected to go live at the end of this month (www.michaelfdiamonds.com).

As a photographer, I am privy to a unique perspective on jewelry – I end up seeing the work at high magnification. It often looks very different than to the casual, naked eye. Michael F & Co. jewelry boasts some of the cleanest lines and detail normally only found in the best jewelry from stores like Tiffany’s and Cartier.

When I saw the quality of Michael F&Co jewelry I really wanted to do something unique, something that would display the jewelry to its best advantage. I spent half the night prior to my first day at Michael’s experimenting with different photo ideas at home – to the exasperation of my wife, who was required to give her female input. After all, there must be a reason why diamonds are called “a girl’s best friend :).”

I am glad that Michael agreed to the idea I proposed and hope you will like it as well – As always I would appreciate any comments and critique – especially if you happen to be another jewelry photographer…
